Domaine Watson is a boutique family-owned winery located in Irancy and Chablis, Burgundy. It was founded in the 1990s by Christopher Watson, a British-born international lawyer and the only Englishman to be made a Pilier de Chablis (an honor for those safeguarding the region's wine traditions).
Key Figures
-
Christopher Watson: Founder and "Burgundian soul born in England." He planted the vineyards starting in 1991.
-
Emilie (Emma) Watson: Daughter of Christopher. Globally recognized actress and activist who grew up spending summers working in the family vineyards. She is a co-founder and creative lead for the family's spirits venture.
-
Alex Watson: Son of Christopher and CEO of the family's gin brand, Renais. He is an experienced drinks industry professional (formerly of Diageo).
The "Story" of Domaine Watson
The estate is built on seven small vineyards nestled in the limestone hills. Christopher Watson’s journey began while practicing law in Paris in the 1980s, where he fell in love with the Burgundian lifestyle through fly-fishing and local friendships. His friends eventually told him, "We need to find you a vineyard!" and he began acquiring land that was highly regarded in the 19th century but had been overlooked.
The Legacy Continues: In 2023, the family's winemaking heritage took a modern turn with the launch of Renais Gin.
-
The "Upcycling" Innovation: Emma and Alex created the gin to honor their father's work by using upcycled grape skins and lees from the winemaking process (including from Domaine Watson).
-
Terroir-Driven Spirit: The gin is unique because it is infused with Kimmeridgian stone distillate—the very limestone that gives their Chablis and Irancy wines their signature mineral "kick."
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
The 2020 is currently "singing," having shed its youthful tightness to reveal a more aromatic, earthy core.
-
The Nose: Aromatic and Distinctive. It leads with a punchy bouquet of blackcurrant and Morello cherry. As it breathes, the signature Irancy "earthiness" takes over, showing notes of liquorice, wet tobacco, and fresh leather, with a subtle floral lift of violet.
-
The Palate: Full-Bodied yet Fresh. The entry is surprisingly voluminous for a northern Pinot Noir. You’ll find layers of dark berries and spice, supported by firm, well-integrated tannins. The Kimmeridgian limestone soil (the same as in Chablis) provides a "salty" mineral streak that keeps the mid-palate vibrant.
-
The Finish: Long and Savory. It concludes with a persistent finish of peppery spice and dark fruit, leaving a clean, mineral impression.

Pro Tip
Irancy is often called a "food wine" because of its virile tannins and high aromatic power. Decant for 30–45 minutes to let the "licorice and leather" notes emerge from the primary fruit. Serve at 16°C–18°C.
The Pairing: Its "savory and classic" profile makes it an exceptional partner for Roasted Poultry, Duck Confit, or Game Birds. In Finland, it is a spectacular match for Slow-cooked Beef Stew or Mature Cheeses (like Époisses or Comté), where the wine's acidity and mineral finish cut through the richness of the food.
