The "Wild Spirit" of Rio Torto – A Storm in a Bottle

In March 2026, the 2023 Torrente is the most discussed "standalone declaration" from Van Zellers & Co. While the Classic Vintage 2023 focuses on the balanced signature of the year, Torrente (named after the powerful streams that surge through the Douro valleys after rain) is a tribute to raw energy. It is a bold, untamed interpretation of the vintage, dominated by the Sousão grape—a variety famous for its "ink-black" color and fierce, high-tension acidity.

Cristiano van Zeller describes this wine not as a "second wine," but as a specific impulse of nature. It is a limited release of only 2,500 bottles, with a unique aging strategy: half are released now (2025/2026) for those seeking youthful power, and the other half will "sleep" in the winery’s cellars until 2035.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

Torrente is defined by its "electric" intensity and deep, muscular structure.

  • The Nose: Explosive and Dark. It bursts with a concentrated "wall" of black cherries, mulberries, and wild blueberries. Unlike the Classic Vintage, it has a distinct savory edge with notes of crushed violets, cacao nibs, and wet stone.

  • The Palate: Gripping and Fierce. This is a wine of "tremendous concentration." The Sousão dominance provides a searing acidity that cuts through the massive fruit. The tannins are firm and muscular, creating a "stormy" mouthfeel that is both rich and precise.

  • The Finish: Long and Taut. It concludes with a persistent finish of dark chocolate and forest floor, leaving a mouth-watering impression driven by its high mineral energy.

Pro Tip

If you are opening a bottle of Torrente in 2026, you are catching it in its most "vibrant and wild" form. Decant for at least 4 hours. The Sousão acidity is so high that the wine can feel "shut down" initially; it needs oxygen to move from its primary tartness into its deeper, chocolatey complexity.

The "Time-Travel" Tip: Because 1,300 bottles are being held at the estate for a decade, this is a rare opportunity for collectors. If you buy a bottle now, try to find the "2035 Release" later to see how the "wild torrent" of Sousão acidity eventually transforms into a "profound and contemplative" masterpiece.

Pairing: This wine has enough "steel" to handle the richest dishes. It is the perfect partner for Strong Blue Cheeses (Roquefort), Bitter Dark Chocolate (85%+), or Wild Boar with a blackberry reduction.
