The "Classic" Declaration – A Year of Balanced Intensity
In March 2026, the Van Zellers 2023 Vintage Port is one of the most talked-about "En Primeur" releases in the Douro. While the house also released a special "Torrente" bottling in 2023 (dominated by the Sousão grape), the Classic Vintage Port is the flagship expression of the year.
The 2023 growing season was a "rollercoaster" defined by extremes. A wet winter replenished water reserves, followed by a searingly hot August where temperatures topped 45°C. Crucial rains in early September saved the harvest, allowing for a "slow-motion" ripening that preserved acidity. Cristiano van Zeller has described 2023 as a year where "nature didn't whisper, it roared," resulting in wines with deeper color and more structural "grip" than the 2021 or 2022 releases.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 "En Primeur" Perspective)
As this wine is currently in its earliest stage of life, it is characterized by "raw energy" and explosive primary fruit.
-
The Nose: Profound and Opaque. It opens with a "wall" of dark fruit: elderberry, blackberry, and black cherries. As it sits, the classic "Rio Torto" floral markers emerge—crushed violets and rockrose—alongside a hint of cacao nibs and wet slate.
-
The Palate: Muscular and Precise. The entry is broad and mouth-filling. Unlike the softer 2012 or 2017, the 2023 has "chewy," firm tannins and a vibrant acidity that gives the wine a "vertical" feel. You’ll find layers of dark chocolate, licorice, and spicy plum.
-
The Finish: Long and Harmonic. It concludes with a persistent, tapering finish of blueberries and graphite, showing the incredible balance between its massive fruit and structural "bones."

Pro Tip
In 2026, this wine is essentially a "baby." If you are lucky enough to have an early bottle, it requires at least 3–4 hours of decanting to move past its initial "inky" tightness. However, the 2023 is truly designed for the cellar.
The Collector's Note: Because 2023 was so intense, the wine has a very high concentration of anthocyanins (color) and tannins, which act as natural preservatives. This makes it a perfect "birth year" wine or a cornerstone for a long-term collection.
The Pairing: While usually saved for the end of a meal with Stilton cheese or dark chocolate fondant, the 2023's high acidity also makes it a surprising match for rich, gamey meats like a venison loin with a Port-reduction sauce.
