The "Life's Work" – A Cooler, High-Precision Masterpiece

In March 2026, the 2021 CV Tinto is being hailed as one of the most elegant and "finesse-driven" vintages in the history of this iconic label. While the 2017 and 2019 vintages were celebrated for their raw power and concentration, the 2021 reflects a much cooler growing season in the Douro. This resulted in a wine with lower alcohol (14.5% compared to the usual 15.5%) and a "shimmering" acidity that brings the complex aromatics of the 80-year-old vines to the forefront.

Sourced from a single, north-facing vineyard in the Rio Torto Valley, the CV is a field blend of over 40 indigenous grape varieties. This specific vineyard's orientation was crucial in 2021, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and maintain a remarkable level of freshness and "energy."

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The 2021 is currently in its "expressive youth." It is less about "chewy" density and more about layers of floral and mineral complexity.

  • The Nose: Highly Fragrant and Deep. It opens with an intense bouquet of violet and rockrose. Underneath the floral layer, you’ll find concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, black cherries, and plums, seamlessly integrated with spicy notes of cinnamon and vanilla from the French oak.

  • The Palate: Elegant and Balanced. The entry is medium-to-full-bodied but feels "weightless." The tannins are incredibly fine-grained—polished by 21 months in French oak (75% new)—providing a silky structure that supports flavors of wild berries and dark chocolate.

  • The Finish: Long and Seductive. It concludes with a persistent, fruity finish marked by a refreshing "crunchy" acidity and a lingering hint of tobacco leaf and graphite.

Pro Tip

The 2021 CV is less "stubborn" than the 2017 but still requires air to show its best. Decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the violet and spice notes to emerge from the dark fruit core. Serve at 16°C–18°C.

Because of its high-toned acidity and elegant tannins, it is a world-class partner for Roasted Lamb, Veal with a mushroom reduction, or Pork Belly. In Finland, it is an exceptional match for Grilled Game Meats or oven-baked root vegetables with aromatic herbs like dill and rosemary, which complement the wine's savory, earthy undertones.
