A multi-layered tawny port aged for over 40 years, reflecting Van Zellers’ centuries-old craftsmanship and the traditions of the Douro Valley.
The Van Zellers family is one of the world’s oldest port producers, with roots dating back to 1620. The family has been a key part of the Douro Valley’s wine culture for more than 14 generations. ‘Over 40 Years Very Old Tawny’ is a blend of over 30 different Douro grape varieties.
The Douro is the world’s oldest officially demarcated wine region, and its steep, rocky slopes are iconic landscapes where port wine was born. The region’s vineyards rise to 600–800 metres above sea level, and some are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The grapes are foot-trodden in traditional lagares stone vats, ensuring gentle yet efficient extraction. Fermentation is halted by adding grape spirit, preserving the wine’s natural sweetness. The wine ages in very old wooden casks for an average of over 40 years. It is bottled to order, allowing its natural evolution to continue in the cellars.
A perfect companion to chocolatey, nutty and caramel-based desserts. The wine’s nutty aromas also pair beautifully with strong cheeses such as blue cheese. And why not enjoy this delicious and iconic port wine by the fireplace or as a digestif at the end of a meal.
