Villa Trasqua Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Nerento 2017/2018
Sis. ALV 25,5%
The "Grand Cru" of Castellina – Organic Power and Elegance
In March 2026, the 2017 Villa Trasqua Nerento is firmly in its prime drinking window. As a Gran Selezione, it sits at the absolute top of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid, produced exclusively from the estate's finest single vineyard, "Nerento." This 13-hectare parcel is a "Grand Cru" site in Castellina in Chianti, where 100% Sangiovese vines grow in a complex mix of Alberese (limestone) and Galestro (marl) soils.
The 2017 vintage was famously hot and dry in Tuscany, which resulted in a lower yield but incredible concentration. While many 2017s can feel "jammy," Villa Trasqua’s high-altitude and organic farming maintained a vital acidity that keeps this wine balanced and fresh.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
The 2017 has moved past its youthful tannic grip and now shows a beautiful harmony between ripe fruit and savory Tuscan earth.
-
The Nose: Intense and Multi-Layered. It leads with a sophisticated bouquet of lavender, spice box, and sour cherries. As it breathes, deeper notes of sweet blackberries, fresh leather, and cloves emerge, followed by a balsamic hint of eucalyptus.
-
The Palate: Rich and Enveloping. The entry is broad and muscular. You’ll find a concentrated core of black mulberry and licorice, supported by firm, chewy tannins that have become well-integrated through extensive aging. There is a "perfumed" wood character that adds structure without masking the fruit.
-
The Finish: Persistent and Savory. It concludes with a long, elegant trail of black cherry, tobacco, and cocoa, leaving a clean, mineral impression typical of Castellina terroir.

Pro Tip
The 2017 Nerento is a "serious" Sangiovese that rewards patience. Decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the spice-box and balsamic notes to fully bloom. Serve at 16°C–18°C in a large Bordeaux-style glass.
Because of its structural power and savory finish, it is a world-class partner for Bistecca alla Fiorentina (T-bone steak), wild boar ragu, or slow-cooked lamb. It also pairs beautifully with aged Tuscan cheeses like Pecorino Toscano DOP. In Finland, try it with grilled elk or venison to match the wine's earthy complexity.
