The High-Altitude Aristocrat – A "Typical Styrian" Classic

In March 2026, the 2023 Verus Riesling is being celebrated as a triumph of "cool-climate" winemaking. Despite a challenging summer in Slovenia marked by frequent storms and a delayed ripening period, a beautiful "Indian Summer" starting in mid-August allowed the grapes to reach optimal maturity. The resulting 2023 vintage is characterized by its "extreme drinkability," featuring slightly lower alcohol levels and a laser-focused varietal precision that Verus fans have come to expect.

Produced in the Štajerska region from the iconic steep slopes of Jeruzalem, Kog, and Ivanjkovci, this 2023 expression captures the flinty, herbal energy of the marl and clay soils.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The 2023 is currently in its most vibrant and "electric" phase, showing a remarkable tension between its fruit and its mineral backbone.

  • The Nose: Intriguing and Aromatic. It opens with a sophisticated bouquet of pressed basil leaf and lime zest. As it sits in the glass, it reveals layers of ripe peach skin and white blossoms, with that signature "steely" or "stony" mineral character that defines high-altitude Riesling.

  • The Palate: Fresh and Linear. The entry is light-to-medium-bodied with a brilliant, crisp acidity. You’ll find a concentrated core of green apple and citrus, balanced by a "warming" roundness and a tiny touch of residual sugar (3.9 g/l) that perfectly softens the sharp acid without making the wine taste sweet.

  • The Finish: Long and Savory. It concludes with a refreshing, saline finale and a lingering hint of herbal green spice.

Pro Tip

The 2023 Verus Riesling is a "gastronomic" wine. Because of its unique basil and lime profile, it is an incredible partner for Asian-inspired dishes, particularly those with lemongrass or ginger. It is also a world-class match for delicate white fish (like Perch or Pike-perch) and fresh goat's cheese.

If you are drinking this in a professional setting or a tasting, serve it at 10°C–12°C. Avoid serving it "ice cold," as the subtle peach and herbal notes can be muted by extreme chill.
