The Alpine Jewel – A Masterclass in High-Altitude Precision

In March 2026, the 2019 Verus Pinot Noir is widely considered one of the finest red wine values coming out of Slovenia. Produced in the Štajerska (Styrian) region by three friends—Danilo, Božidar, and Rajko—this wine reflects the extreme "cool climate" viticulture of the eastern Alps. Sourced from steep, vertical vineyards in Ivanjkovci and Jeruzalem at altitudes of up to 340 meters, the 2019 vintage benefited from a long, balanced ripening season that preserved the grape's delicate aromatics while developing significant structural depth.

While Verus is world-famous for its white wines (particularly Furmint), this Pinot Noir has become a "sommelier secret" for those looking for the elegance of a Côte de Nuits at a much more accessible profile.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

After seven years of aging, the 2019 has transitioned from pure primary fruit into a sophisticated, multi-layered "forest floor" profile.

  • The Nose: Fragrant and Inviting. It leads with a beautiful bouquet of ripe strawberries, preserved cherries, and candied orange zest. As it breathes, sophisticated "cool climate" notes emerge: dried hibiscus, delicate nougat, and a hint of flinty smoke.

  • The Palate: Silky and High-Tension. The entry is medium-bodied with a vibrant, gentle acidity. You’ll find intense flavors of raspberry and sweet cherry, supported by soft, powdery tannins that have fully integrated. There is a distinct mineral "crunch" on the mid-palate that is a hallmark of the Štajerska marl soils.

  • The Finish: Long and Savory. It concludes with a clean, refreshing finale featuring notes of licorice, bay leaf, and a touch of earthy undergrowth.

Pro Tip

Don't be fooled by the screwcap—this is a serious, age-worthy Pinot Noir. Because of the high-altitude acidity and the 2019 vintage's concentration, it benefits from a quick 30-minute decant to let the smoky, flinty notes settle and the red fruit "bloom." Serve slightly chilled at 15°C–17°C.

Its "gentle but intense" profile makes it a world-class partner for veal with porcini mushrooms, duck breast with a cherry reduction, or a wild mushroom risotto. It is also one of the few red wines that pairs beautifully with grilled salmon or aged goat cheese.
