Vega Sicilia Unico 1989

The "Opulent Powerhouse" – A Monument of Intensity and Youthful Vigor
In March 2026, the 1989 Único stands in fascinating contrast to the 1987. While the '87 is prized for its ethereal delicacy, the 1989 is a "tour de force" of concentration and power. The growing season featured a warm spring followed by an early, dry harvest starting on September 30th. This resulted in smaller, thicker-skinned berries with massive extract.
Often cited by James Suckling (98 points) as a vintage with "extraordinary chewy extract," the 1989 spent an incredible 10 years in the winery before release, undergoing a rigorous cycle through large oak vats, new barrels, and seasoned casks. As of 2026, it is widely considered one of the most "youthful" mature vintages, still possessing a primary fruit drive that many 40-year-old wines have long lost.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
This is a "wide-shouldered" Único. It is dense, dark, and still remarkably vibrant.
-
The Nose: Intense and Inviting. It opens with a heady mix of roasted coffee beans, cardamom, and balsamic. As it sits, it reveals a lush core of blackberries, figs, and spice box, with the signature Vega Sicilia "sweet" notes of vanilla and caramel.
-
The Palate: Plush and Fleshy. The mouthfeel is caressing and voluminous. You’ll find a deep concentration of dark plums and blackcurrant, complicated by menthol, graphite, and exotic dried fruits. The tannins are powerful but have become perfectly "melted" and ripe over the decades.
-
The Finish: Explosive and Long. It concludes with a 60-second finale that radiates dark chocolate, licorice, and a distinct mineral thrust.

Pro Tip
The 1989 is much more robust than the 1987. It can handle—and even requires—more air. Decant for at least 60 minutes to allow the "menthol and spice box" notes to fully emerge from the dense fruit. Serve at 17°C–18°C.
Because of its "full-bodied and fleshy" nature, it is a spectacular partner for Beef Wellington, Venison with a chocolate-juniper sauce, or slow-roasted Reindeer. It has the structural "steel" to stand up to very rich, savory dishes that would overwhelm more delicate vintages.
