Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2020

The "Changing of the Guard" – A Masterpiece of Tension and Purity

In March 2026, the 2020 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir is viewed as a landmark vintage in Australian wine history. This was the final year overseen by founder Phillip Jones before the estate transitioned to the full stewardship of Jean-Marie Fourrier. The 2020 growing season in South Gippsland was cool and temperate, yielding a wine that is significantly more "ethereal" and high-toned than the muscular 2017 or 2019 vintages.

Collectors are currently highlighting this bottle for its incredible "pinosity"—a term used to describe the perfect marriage of floral aromatics and a delicate, vibrating structure.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

Six years after harvest, the 2020 Estate has settled into a "crystalline" state, trading raw power for a sophisticated, haunting complexity.

  • The Nose: Exquisite and Floral. It leads with a "shimmering" bouquet of wild strawberries, crushed rose petals, and blood orange. As it opens, sophisticated secondary layers of dried herbs, forest floor, and a hint of white pepper emerge.

  • The Palate: Silky and Linear. The entry is remarkably graceful, featuring pure red cherry and cranberry fruit. Unlike the "brooding" vintages, the 2020 is defined by its electric acidity and ultra-fine, chalky tannins that feel like lace on the tongue.

  • The Finish: Persistent and Saline. It concludes with a long, "mineral-driven" finish of pomegranate, tea leaf, and a distinct savory earthiness.

Pro Tip

The 2020 Estate is a wine of "nuance" rather than "weight." To preserve its delicate floral aromatics, do not over-decant—30 minutes of air is plenty to let the wine stretch its legs. Serve at a slightly cooler 14°C–15°C to highlight the vibrant red fruit and mineral tension. Its high-toned profile makes it an exceptional partner for Tea-Smoked Duck, Seared King Salmon, or a Truffled Goat Cheese.
