Phillipp Bass Estate Chardonnay 2020

The "Burgundian Bridge" – A Landmark Transition in Australian Viticulture
In March 2026, the 2020 Bass Phillip Estate Chardonnay is recognized as a historic "transition vintage." This was the final year under the direct management of founder Phillip Jones before the estate’s evolution under the guidance of Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Burgundy’s famed Domaine Fourrier). The 2020 season in South Gippsland was marked by cooler-than-average bookends, which preserved a high-toned natural acidity and a "chiseled" precision that aligns perfectly with the estate’s move toward even greater Burgundian finesse.
This is a wine of incredible density and energy, produced from close-planted, dry-grown vines that have been farmed biodynamically for decades.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
Six years after the harvest, the 2020 Estate Chardonnay has entered a beautiful drinking window, trading its youthful citrus-sharpness for a layered, nutty complexity.
-
The Nose: Intense and Multi-Dimensional. It opens with a sophisticated "struck-match" reduction (toasty flint) followed by lemon curd, apple tart, and nectarine. As it breathes, savory secondary notes of cashew nut, toasted brioche, and nougat emerge.
-
The Palate: Lush yet Tightly Woven. The entry is rich and juicy, featuring mouth-filling flavors of ripe peach and yellow plum. This richness is immediately cut by a steely, saline backbone and electric acidity that drives the wine forward.
-
The Finish: Savory and Persistent. It leaves an exceptionally long, "empyreumatic" trail of mineral salts, citrus pith, and a touch of creamy lees.

Pro Tip
Bass Phillip Chardonnays are famously "shy" upon opening. To unlock the full 2020 aromatics, decant the wine for 30–45 minutes. This allows the reductive "matchstick" notes to step back, revealing the opulent fruit and nut layers. Serve at 12°C–14°C—slightly warmer than a standard white—to appreciate its full-bodied texture. It is a world-class partner for Miso-Glazed Black Cod, Roasted Chicken with Truffle Butter, or Lobster in Beurre Blanc.
