Rupert & Rothschild CLASSIQUE 2021 (EDR)
Sis. ALV 25,5%
The "Ambassador" – A Polished Bordeaux Blend from the Cape of Good Hope
In March 2026, the 2021 Classique is widely regarded as one of the most successful vintages of this iconic red blend in recent years. While the estate’s "Baron Edmond" represents the peak of their power, the Classique is the "elegant diplomat"—designed to be approachable, refined, and consistently high-quality.
The 2021 growing season in the Western Cape was cool and elongated, which allowed for exceptional flavor development and "crunchy" red fruit acidity without the heavy alcohol often seen in warmer years. This has resulted in a Classique that is notably more "vertical" and fresh than the plusher 2020.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
At five years old, the 2021 has fully integrated its oak and is currently in a beautiful "primary-to-secondary" transition phase.
-
The Nose: Classical and Sophisticated. It opens with a vibrant bouquet of red plums, dark cherries, and fresh mulberries. As it breathes, the Rothschild influence becomes clear through notes of pencil shavings (graphite), dried coriander, and a hint of cedar.
-
The Palate: Silky and Balanced. The entry is medium-bodied and "seamless." You’ll find layers of ripe blackberry and cassis, supported by fine-grained, cocoa-powder tannins. Unlike many New World blends, it maintains a refreshing acidity that keeps the dark fruit "lifted" and bright.
-
The Finish: Persistent and Savory. It concludes with a long, clean trail of tobacco leaf and dark chocolate, leaving a polished and elegant impression.

Pro Tip
The 2021 Classique is a "gastronomic" red that bridges the gap between a Right-Bank Bordeaux and a modern South African red. To experience its full aromatic spectrum, decant for 30–45 minutes before serving. Aim for a service temperature of 17°C—too warm, and you lose the delicate cedar and plum notes; too cold, and the tannins will feel slightly "grippy."
Its balanced acidity and refined tannins make it a world-class partner for Grilled Lamb Chops, Mushroom Risotto, or Seared Duck Breast. It also pairs exceptionally well with milder blue cheeses like a creamy Gorgonzola Dolce.
