Rupert & Rothschild "Baroness Nadine" Chardonnay

The "South African Meursault" – A Harmonious Union of Cape Terroir and French Lineage

In March 2026, the Baroness Nadine remains the sole white wine produced by the prestigious Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons. This joint venture—established in 1997 between the Rupert family of South Africa and the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild of France—was designed to apply traditional Bordeaux and Burgundian techniques to the sun-drenched soils of the Western Cape.

The wine is named in honor of Baroness Nadine de Rothschild, the wife of Baron Edmond. While the red wines of the estate focus on the structure of Paarl and Franschhoek, the Chardonnay is a broader selection from premium cool-climate pockets across the Coastal Region, specifically targeting a style that balances New World fruit intensity with Old World mineral restraint.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The 2023 and 2024 vintages are the current highlights. The 2024, in particular, is being hailed as one of the most balanced releases in recent years, favoring "lime-gold" vibrancy over heavy oak.

  • The Nose: Luminous and Fragrant. It opens with a sophisticated bouquet of citrus blossom, mandarin orange, and white peach. As it breathes, look for the "Rothschild signature" of roasted hazelnuts, macadamia, and a whisper of vanilla spice.

  • The Palate: Creamy and "Mid-Atlantic." The entry is rich and textured—often described as "buttery" but never flabby. You’ll find flavors of lemon cream, passion fruit, and crisp melon. The 11 months of lees aging provides a dense, concentrated core that feels expensive and polished.

  • The Finish: Fresh and Persistent. It concludes with a "linear" acidity and a distinct saline minerality that cleanses the palate, leaving a lingering impression of toasted almond.

Pro Tip

Baroness Nadine is a "gastronomic" Chardonnay that bridges the gap between a lean Chablis and a rich Meursault. To fully appreciate its complex layering, do not serve it ice-cold. Aim for 10°C–12°C. If you have a bottle from the 2019 or 2020 vintages, you will notice the secondary "crusty bread" and honey notes have become more prominent.

Its creamy texture and citrus brightness make it a perfect partner for Grilled Crayfish, Scallops with lemon butter, or Roasted Chicken with thyme. It is also one of the best companions for nutty hard cheeses like an aged Gruyère.
