The "Grand Cru" of Saumur – A Crystalline Expression of Tuffeau Limestone

In March 2026, the 2021 Clos Romans is regarded as one of Thierry Germain’s most triumphant white wines. This "clos" (walled vineyard) is a legendary site in Parnay, featuring an 11th-century wall and a unique terroir of only 30cm of soil sitting directly on top of solid Sénonien limestone (tuffeau).

The 2021 vintage in the Loire was defined by its "cool-climate classicism." After a series of very hot years, 2021 returned to a style characterized by high tension, lower alcohol, and a "shimmering" mineral energy. At five years old, this wine is shedding its youthful austerity and entering its first major drinking window.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The 2021 Clos Romans is a "vertical" wine—it prioritizes structure, saltiness, and precision over fruity sweetness.

  • The Nose: Iodic and Floral. It opens with a striking "sea-spray" and saline character. As it breathes, layers of fresh almond, lemon bergamot, and white lilies emerge. There is a very subtle, noble hint of anise and woodsmoke from the 9 months it spent in oval 400L barrels.

  • The Palate: Laser-Sharp and Crystalline. The entry is electric. The wine is famous for its acidic "backbone" that feels like a laser beam on the tongue. You’ll find flavors of green apple, lime zest, and underripe pineapple, but the defining feature is the chalky, tactile sensation of the limestone.

  • The Finish: Epic and Saline. It concludes with a long, mouth-watering finish of crushed seashells and minty freshness. Critics often compare its dry, saline intensity to a fine Andalusian Fino Sherry.

Pro Tip

This is not a casual aperitif wine; it is a "thrilling powerhouse" that demands food and air. Decant for at least 60 minutes before serving to allow the initial "sulfurous" mineral reduction to blow off and reveal the floral notes. Serve at 11°C–12°C in a large Burgundy glass—too cold, and you will lose the subtle nuances of almond and spice.
