The First Full Story – The Historic Debut of Mainland Finnish Rum

In March 2026, Readers' Rum Chapter One is a landmark bottle in the Finnish craft spirits scene. Following the successful "Preface" (their initial unaged or lightly rested release), Chapter One represents the distillery's first fully matured rum. Produced by Authors' Distillery in Mäntsälä, this is the first rum ever to be fermented, distilled, and aged in mainland Finland.

True to the distillery's literary theme, the rum is crafted to be a "slow sip" companion for readers. It utilizes high-quality sugar cane molasses, Finnish groundwater, and a maturation process designed to withstand the dramatic temperature shifts of the Nordic climate.

🥃 Tasting Notes & Profile

While the "Preface" was noted for its raw energy and caramel-nutty sweetness, Chapter One has gained significant structural depth and "darker" library-like notes from its time in the barrel.

  • The Nose: Dry and Wood-Forward. It opens with a sophisticated bouquet of toasted oak, dark cocoa, and vanilla bean. Unlike tropical rums that can be overly fruity, this has a more "serious" aromatic profile with hints of leather and dried tobacco.

  • The Palate: Medium-Bodied and Balanced. The entry is surprisingly dry. You’ll find layers of burnt sugar, molasses, and roasted nuts. As it settles, a spicy complexity of cinnamon and black pepper emerges, characteristic of the pot-still distillation.

  • The Finish: Long and Warming. It concludes with a persistent trail of vanilla, oak tannins, and a faint hint of dark chocolate, leaving a clean, balanced heat on the palate.

Pro Tip

This is a "Rum for Whisky Lovers." Because of its dry, wood-driven profile and 43% ABV, it performs best when served neat or with a single large ice cube in a wide glass. If you are using it in a cocktail, it makes an extraordinary Rum Old Fashioned—the oaky notes of Chapter One stand up beautifully to Angostura bitters and a simple orange twist.

Avoid using it in heavy tiki drinks with lots of fruit juice; the subtle "Chapter One" nuances are better appreciated in drinks where the spirit remains the protagonist.
