A Douro classic from old vines: a dense, multi‑layered handcrafted wine that radiates the powerful character of its region.
Quinta Vale D. Maria is one of the Douro’s iconic family estates, with a history dating back to the 19th century. Vinhas Velhas means old vines, and in this wine the grapes come from vineyards that are 60–80 years old.
The wine comes from the Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is made from traditional Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Sousão. The diversity of old vines brings depth, complexity and a long, layered finish.
The harvest is carried out carefully by hand, and part of the grapes is traditionally foot‑trodden in lagares, adding structure to the wine. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the grapes’ natural fruit and acidity. The wine is aged for 12–18 months in French oak barrels.
This multi‑layered Douro shines at the table: the perfect partner for game, grilled meats and slow‑cooked stews. Bold cheeses and spicy vegetable dishes also find a balanced match. The wine ages beautifully in the cellar for more than a decade.
