Michel Clair Santenay Rouge 2022

The "Hidden Value" of the Côte de Beaune – Rustic Charm & Silky Fruit
In March 2026, Domaine Michel Clair remains one of the most reliable names for those seeking "true" Burgundy without the astronomical price tags of its neighbors in Chassagne or Meursault. Based in Santenay, at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, the family (now led by Michel’s son, Jean-Baptiste) produces wines that perfectly capture the transition from the limestone-heavy whites of the north to the structural reds of the south.
The current releases from the 2022 and 2023 vintages are showing beautifully. 2022, in particular, was a "generous" year that provided these wines with a plushness that rounds out Santenay's naturally firm tannins.
The Red: Santenay 'Les Hâtes' & 1er Crus
-
The Vibe: If Gevrey-Chambertin is "power," Michel Clair's Santenay is "earthy elegance."
-
The Style: These are Pinot Noirs that don't try to be "pretty" through heavy oak. Instead, they focus on the purity of red fruit and the savory, mineral grip of the Santenay soil.
-
Tasting Notes (2022/2023):
-
The Nose: High-toned aromas of wild raspberries, black cherries, and peonies, with a distinct "forest floor" and iron-like mineral undertone.
-
The Palate: Medium-bodied and energetic. It features "crunchy" red fruit balanced by fine-grained, peppery tannins.
-
The Finish: Clean and slightly salty, making it incredibly food-friendly.
-
-
Best Paired With: Roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or mild washed-rind cheeses.
The White: Santenay 'Les Charmes' & 1er Crus
-
The Vibe: A "secret weapon" for Chardonnay lovers. Santenay whites often mimic the weight of Chassagne-Montrachet but with a more direct, stony character.
-
The Style: Michel Clair uses very little new oak, allowing the citrus zest and white flower notes to take center stage.
-
Tasting Notes (2023):
-
The Nose: Vibrant and "flinty." It leads with green apple, lemon curd, and white peach, followed by a hint of toasted almond.
-
The Palate: "Nervy" and precise. There is a lovely creamy texture from lees aging, but it is always sliced through by a sharp line of acidity.
-
The Finish: Long and mineral, with a refreshing grapefruit pith bitterness.
-
-
Best Paired With: Grilled sea bass, poultry in white wine sauce, or goat cheese.
📋 Key Cuvees to Look For
| Wine | Level | Profile |
| Santenay 'Les Hâtes' | Village Red | Deep, structured, and classic. Great for aging. |
| Santenay 1er Cru 'Clos des Tavannes' | 1er Cru Red | The "Grandest" of the reds; silky, floral, and very elegant. |
| Santenay 'Les Charmes' | Village White | Ripe, golden fruit with a stony, saline finish. |
| Santenay 1er Cru 'Beaurepaire' | 1er Cru White | Intense, high-acid, and very "Burgundian" complexity. |
Drinking Window & Service
-
Reds (2022): You can enjoy these now with a 1-hour decant, but they will hit their "sweet spot" between 2027 and 2034. Serve at 16°C.
-
Whites (2023): Deliciously fresh right now. These are "vibrant" bottles meant for the next 3–5 years. Serve at 11–13°C.
Pro Tip: Michel Clair is a "grower's producer." Because they don't have a massive marketing machine, you are paying for the quality of the farming rather than the label. If you see the 2022 'Clos des Tavannes', grab it—it’s often cited as one of the best value-for-money Premier Crus in the entire Côte de Beaune.
