Masseto is one of Italy’s most renowned cult wines and is considered among the world’s most prestigious Merlot wines. The wine originates from the vineyard known as Masseto Hill in Bolgheri, Tuscany. The blue‑clay soil is so distinctive that it is referred to as “Massetone” and this is the inspiration behind the wine’s name.
Masseto is made from 100% Merlot, but this is far from an ordinary merlot. The vineyard’s clay‑rich, mineral‑laden soil and the cooling sea breezes create an exceptionally distinctive aromatic profile. The vineyard is located close to the Tyrrhenian Sea, which brings freshness to the wine and helps balance the heat of the summer days.
The grapes are harvested by hand, block by block, to ensure that each component of the wine is picked at optimal ripeness. Fermentation takes place in small stainless‑steel tanks and concrete vats, allowing precise temperature control and preservation of the aromas. The wine is aged for approximately 24 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new.
