A Monumental Nectar of the Rheingau

In 2026, the 2015 Hochheimer Kirchenstück Beerenauslese (BA) has evolved into a masterclass of liquid gold. The 2015 vintage in Germany is considered legendary, often compared to the iconic 1971 or 1990 vintages for its rare combination of massive sugar concentration and soaring, vibrant acidity.

This bottling comes from the Kirchenstück (Church Piece), a site world-renowned for its deep, calcareous loess and marl soils. Because of its proximity to the Main river, it is particularly prone to the "morning fog" required for Botrytis cinerea (Noble Rot), which allows Weingut Künstler to produce these ultra-concentrated, botrytized dessert wines with remarkable frequency and quality.

The Terroir: The Warmth of Hochheim

  • The Vibe: If a Mosel BA is a "crystal flute," a Hochheimer BA is a "golden cello." It is deeper, broader, and more textural.

  • The Microclimate: Hochheim is the easternmost point of the Rheingau. Its vineyards face south and are sheltered from cold winds, resulting in grapes that reach high maturity early.

  • The 2015 Signature: This was a "solar" vintage. The botrytis was exceptionally clean, leading to wines that are "unctuous" and thick, yet defined by a piercing, diamond-like acidity.

🍷 Tasting Notes (The "Vibe" in 2026)

Six years into its second decade, the 2015 is moving from "exotic primary fruit" into its complex "honeyed" phase.

  • The Nose: Opulent and Multi-Dimensional. It is a massive cloud of apricot marmalade, dried mango, and lychee. As it breathes, sophisticated notes of manuka honey, beeswax, and saffron emerge, alongside a signature Hochheimer hint of milled stones.

  • The Palate: Viscous and "Pulsating." The entry is thick—literally "dripping" with peach and honey nectar. However, the hallmark of Künstler is the super-racy acidity that kicks in mid-palate, making the 200g/L+ of residual sugar feel weightless and refreshing rather than cloying.

  • The Finish: Infinite and Spicy. It leaves a lingering trail of candied orange peel, caramelized pineapple, and a touch of white pepper.

📋 Technical Snapshot

Feature Reality
Grapes 100% Botrytized Riesling
Residual Sugar Approx. 200g/L
ABV Approx. 7.0% – 8.0%
Closure Screw Cap (Vino-Lok) or Cork (standard for BA/TBA)
Critical Acclaim 94–96 Points (Decanter / James Suckling)
Drinking Window 2021 – 2060. This is an heirloom wine. It is stunning today for its opulence but will gain incredible "petrol and spice" nuances over the next 30+ years.

Best Paired With:

  • The Classic Contrast: Roquefort or Stilton Cheese; the saltiness of the blue cheese creates a legendary "electric" harmony with the wine's sugar and acid.

  • The High-End Match: Foie Gras with a fig compote; the wine’s acidity cuts through the fat while its fruit notes mirror the figs.

  • The Purest Choice: Enjoyed solo as a liquid dessert (a "meditation wine"). One small glass is enough to last an entire evening.

Pro Tip: In 2026, the 2015 BA is reaching a plateau of "perfect balance." To experience the full spectrum of saffron and tropical fruit aromatics, serve it at 8–10°C. Because this is a "Beerenauslese" (Berry Select Harvest), the production was tiny—usually only a few hundred half-bottles (0.375L) were made.
