The "Vertical Powerhouse" – A Masterclass in Yarra Valley Precision
In April 2026, the 2020 Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay has evolved into a wine of immense detail and structural beauty. While Giant Steps is famous for its single-vineyard explorations, the Sexton plot—located on the steep, north-facing slopes of the Warramate Ranges in Gruyere—is consistently the most "serious" and mineral-driven of the lineup.
The 2020 vintage was a "rollercoaster" in the Yarra Valley. A cool spring led to very low yields with small, intense bunches. This naturally concentrated the fruit, resulting in a Chardonnay that balances searing natural acidity with a savory, almost honeyed richness.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
After six years, the 2020 has moved beyond its initial "zesty" phase and is showing sophisticated secondary characteristics.
-
The Nose: Complex and Flinty. It opens with a striking "struck match" reduction—a hallmark of high-end Yarra Chardonnay. Layers of preserved lemon, white peach, and toasted hazelnuts are supported by a delicate note of jasmine and wet stones.
-
The Palate: Restrained and Focused. The entry is "crystalline." You’ll find a concentrated core of grapefruit and nectarine, but the real star is the texture. It is medium-bodied with a silky, phenolic grip and a " Parisian almond" creaminess from the lees aging.
-
The Finish: Long and Saline. It concludes with a persistent, mineral-driven finish that is mouth-wateringly salty and clean.

Pro Tip
The Sexton Vineyard is unique because of its thin topsoil over rocky clay. The vines have to work incredibly hard, which translates into a wine that feels "vertical" and powerful rather than broad and buttery.
The Serving Tip: Serve at 11°C–13°C. Avoid serving it straight from a cold fridge; giving it a bit of warmth allows the savory hazelnut and marzipan notes to emerge from behind the high acidity.
The Pairing:
-
The "Luxe" Match: Exceptional with Grilled Scallops in a lemon-butter sauce or Roasted Poultry with tarragon.
-
The Savory Match: Its mineral backbone makes it a great partner for Mushroom Risotto or a mature Comté cheese.
-
Finnish Twist: A world-class pairing for Seared Whitefish (Siika) served with a light cauliflower purée. The wine's saline minerality mirrors the delicate saltiness of the fish perfectly.
