Flechas de Los Andes 'Gran Corte' 2020. The "Grand Design" – A High-Altitude Masterpiece

🇦🇷 The Vibe If the Aguaribay is the fresh morning breeze of the Andes, the Gran Corte is the full, fiery sunset. This is the flagship "Great Blend" of the estate, representing the pinnacle of the collaboration between Baron Edmond de Rothschild and Laurent Dassault. While many Argentine icons are 100% Malbec, the Gran Corte is a sophisticated "co-fermentation" that follows a more French, multi-layered philosophy. The 2018 vintage was nearly perfect in Mendoza—cool and dry—allowing the grapes to achieve massive concentration without losing their soul.

The NoseThis is a "brooding" and deep wine. It leads with a powerful wave of blueberries, coffee grounds, and beef stock. Because it is co-fermented (the grapes are fermented together), the aromas are incredibly well-integrated. You’ll find layers of violets and purple flowers from the Malbec, mixed with the dried herbs, tobacco, and iodine characteristic of the Cabernet Franc. The 18 months in new French oak add a sophisticated "gloss" of toasted almonds and vanilla.

The TasteOn the palate, the Gran Corte is broad, concentrated, and juicy. It’s a full-bodied experience that commands your attention. You’ll taste blackcurrant and ripe plums, but the real story is the texture: the tannins are fine-grained and silky, yet they provide a massive "grip" that tells you this wine is built to last. There is a refreshing orange peel acidity on the finish that cuts through the richness, leaving a persistent trail of graphite and spice.

Best Paired With:The "Power" Pairing: A thick-cut, dry-aged Bistecca alla Fiorentina or a slow-roasted leg of lamb with a garlic-herb crust. The Complex Dish: Venison with a dark chocolate and chili reduction (the wine's spice and fruit handle this beautifully). The "Connoisseur" Choice: Strong, salty cheeses like Roquefort or a long-aged Gouda.Pro Tip: This 2018 is a serious wine that is just starting to enter its prime. It has a "cellaring potential" of at least 15 years, meaning it will be stunning until 2033+. If you open it today (2026), it is essential to decant it for at least 2 hours. This is a "big" wine that needs plenty of oxygen to reveal its hidden layers.
