The "Solar Alluvial" Classic – Silk, Stone, and Supple Fruit

In March 2026, the 2024 Gérard Seguin "La Justice" is being highlighted as one of the most charming village-level wines of the vintage. While the Lavaux Saint-Jacques we discussed earlier is all about "mountain-cool" verticality, La Justice comes from a very different part of Gevrey. It sits on the northern side of the village on a flat, sun-drenched alluvial fan (the Combe de Lavaux cone).

The 2024 vintage was a "vigneron's challenge," but the Seguin family’s experience with their 40 to 50-year-old vines in this plot proved decisive. The well-draining, stony clay-limestone soil of La Justice helped mitigate the heavy spring rains, allowing the Pinot Noir to reach a beautiful, "transparent" ripeness that reflects the site's historical reputation.

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The 2024 is currently in its "primary charm" phase—highly aromatic and much more approachable than the sterner 1er Crus.

  • The Nose: Floral and Perfumed. It opens with an immediate "pop" of wild strawberry and red cherry. As it breathes, it reveals the classic "Justice" character: woody spices, red plum, and a hint of smoky tobacco, with a faint floral note like dried potpourri.

  • The Palate: Fleshy and Finesse-driven. The entry is "lovely and supple." It has more "flesh" on the bones than the 2021, showing ripe raspberry and pomegranate flavors. The tannins are remarkably fine-grained and "melting," providing a silky texture that is the signature of this specific lieu-dit.

  • The Finish: Sappy and Mineral. It concludes with a persistent finish of red fruit and a savory, earthy mineral undertone, characteristic of the old vines and stony soil.

Pro Tip

La Justice is often called one of the best village-level plots in Gevrey-Chambertin. It is known for being "round and consistent," making it a safer bet for those who find the 1er Crus a bit too "intellectual" or tannic in their youth.

The Serving Tip: Serve at 14°C–16°C. Because this wine relies on its "perfumed charm," use a wide Burgundy glass and decant for 30–45 minutes. This will help the spicy oak notes integrate with the strawberry fruit.

The Pairing:

  • The "Bistro" Match: A classic partner for Roasted Poultry (Duck or Capon) or a Minute Rump Steak with béarnaise sauce.

  • The Savory Match: Excellent with Oeufs en meurette (poached eggs in red wine sauce) or a high-quality Gruyère.

  • Finnish Twist: Pair it with Cold-smoked Salmon (Kylmäsavulohi) on buttered rye bread. The wine’s bright red fruit and earthy finish provide a "sweet-and-savory" contrast to the smoke and salt of the fish.
