🗂️ Château Sociando-Mallet 2020
The "Unclassified Grand Cru" – Classic Haut-Médoc Power, Graphite Precision, and Massive Cellar Potential
Situated in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of Saint-Estèphe, Château Sociando-Mallet is legendary among Bordeaux enthusiasts. Unencumbered by the 1855 classification, the late Jean Gautreau built Sociando into a powerhouse estate that routinely outperforms Classified Growths in blind tastings.
The 2020 vintage completes the celebrated trio of great Bordeaux years (2018, 2019, 2020). Benefiting from deep gravel soils over a dense, clay-limestone subsoil along the Gironde estuary, this bottling delivers the quintessential, muscular, and Cabernet-driven profile for which the château is famous.
🍷 Tasting Notes
The 2020 is a classic, tightly coiled Sociando-Mallet built around intense dark fruit, cedarwood, and unmistakable mineral tension.
-
The Nose: Brooding, Complex, and Aristocratic. Opens with a deep wave of crushed cassis, wild black cherries, and dark plum, interwoven with classic Left Bank signatures of lead pencil shavings, cedar, cigar box, and a subtle whiff of dark tobacco leaf.
-
The Palate: Full-Bodied, Chiseled, and Muscular. The entry is firm and broad-shouldered. Dense black fruit extract is supported by a robust, fine-grained wall of tannins and a driving streak of gravelly acidity. It shows tremendous structural focus with zero flab or over-ripeness.
-
The Finish: Long, Savory, and Stony. Concludes with exceptional length, leaving a long trail of bitter dark chocolate, crushed stones, and savory dried herbs.

Pro Tip
Sociando-Mallet is a traditional Left Bank classic that demands substantial, savory dishes with rich fat and protein to soften its firm tannic structure.
-
The Classic Match: Outstanding alongside roasted leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, prime ribeye steak, or slow-braised beef short ribs.
-
The Game Table: Pairs exceptionally well with roasted venison loin, wild boar stew, or duck breast with a dark berry reduction.
-
The "Nordic" Match: Serve cellar-cooled (16–18°C) after decanting for 2 hours alongside Slow-roasted Elk Fillet (Hirvipaisti) or Sautéed Reindeer (Poronkäristys) served with dark gravy, wild chanterelles, and lingonberries. The deep black currant fruit and cedar tannin structure cut straight through the lean game fats, complementing the wild herbs seamlessly.
