The "Sleeper of the Vintage" – A Classic Moulis Benchmark
In March 2026, the 2019 Château Poujeaux is firmly establishing itself as one of the greatest "insider" values from the left bank. Located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, Poujeaux has a reputation for outperforming its Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status, often rivaling the 1855 Classified Growths.
The 2019 vintage was an exceptional year for the Médoc, characterized by a hot, dry summer that produced grapes with thick skins and incredible concentration. For Poujeaux, this meant a wine with a rare combination of hedonistic fruit and serious, age-worthy structure.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
The 2019 has moved past its primary "infant" stage and is beginning to reveal its true Médoc pedigree. It is dense, aromatic, and remarkably seamless.
-
The Nose: Complex and "Cigar-Box" Classic. It opens with a deep, brooding bouquet of blackberries, crushed plums, and violets. As it breathes, sophisticated secondary notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and loamy soil emerge, with a faint hint of graphite (pencil lead).
-
The Palate: Velvety and Fleshy. The entry is "fleshy and dramatic." You’ll find a concentrated core of blackcurrant and dark chocolate, supported by powdery, polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides a "succulent" lift. It feels medium-to-full-bodied with a layered, deep texture.
-
The Finish: Expansive and Persistent. It concludes with a long, elegant finish that echoes with dark fruit and mineral smoke, showing a finesse that is characteristic of the Grand Poujeaux gravel slopes.

Pro Tip
Poujeaux is often described as "Pauillac-like" because of its structural backbone and cedar notes, but it retains the "softness" of Merlot-heavy Moulis.
The Serving Tip: Serve at 17°C. If drinking in 2026, decant for 1.5 to 2 hours. This is a "serious" wine that needs oxygen to unlock the tight layers of Cabernet fruit and tobacco.
The Pairing:
-
The "Bordeaux" Match: Classic with Rack of Lamb with rosemary or a Porterhouse Steak with a shallot reduction.
-
The Savory Match: Excellent with Duck Confit or a Mushroom and Truffle Risotto.
-
Finnish Twist: A spectacular match for Roast Elk (Hirvipaisti) served with a red wine reduction and roasted root vegetables. The wine’s firm tannins and dark fruit mirror the lean, gamey intensity of the elk perfectly.
