Cantina Tre Pile 'SanBà' Langhe Bianco 2023

The "Rebel White" – A Rare Piedmontese Viognier

The Vibe

In a region famous for its Nebbiolo and Barbera, SanBà is a fascinating outlier. Most people expect a Langhe Bianco to be Chardonnay or Arneis, but Cantina Tre Pile chose to plant Viognier in the San Bartolomeo vineyard (hence the name "SanBà") in Dogliani.

The 2023 vintage marks a significant turning point for this wine. While previous years were aged strictly in stainless steel, starting in 2023, the winery introduced aging in 500-liter French oak tonneaux. This change has transformed SanBà from a simple, fresh white into a serious, gastronomic wine with enough structure to rival a white Burgundy or a Northern Rhône.

The Nose

The 2023 is remarkably aromatic and "exotic." It doesn't smell like a typical Italian white:

  • The Fruit: Lush notes of apricot, white peach, and tropical papaya.

  • The Floral: A heady perfume of honeysuckle and acacia flowers.

  • The New Twist: Thanks to the new oak program, you’ll find a delicate layer of sweet spice, vanilla, and honeycomb that wasn't there in the 2022.

The Taste

On the palate, the 2023 SanBà is rich, oily, and envelope-pushing.

  • The Feel: Viognier is naturally low in acid but high in "texture." The 2023 feels creamy and broad on the tongue, a result of the oak aging and daily bâtonnage (stirring of the lees).

  • The Profile: Flavors of ripe yellow stone fruit and citrus zest are balanced by a surprising saline mineral finish.

  • The Structure: It’s a full-bodied white with a soft, "pillowy" mouthfeel, yet it remains clean and fresh.

  • The "Gourmet" Match: Lobster with drawn butter, scallops, or a creamy mushroom risotto.

  • The White Meat: Roast chicken with herbs or pork tenderloin with an apricot glaze.

  • The Cheese: Intense, creamy cheeses like Epoisses or a ripe Camembert.

  • Spicy Food: Surprisingly excellent with mildly spicy Thai curry—the wine's texture and fruitiness handle the spice beautifully.

Pro Tip: In 2026, the 2023 SanBà is drinking beautifully, but it actually benefits from a bit of air. Do not serve it ice cold; treat it like a fine Chardonnay. Serve it at 10–12°C in a larger glass to let the complex honey and tropical fruit aromas expand.
