The Wild Side of Kamptal – A Dark, Electric Natural Blend

The AWM (Austrian Wine Mafia) "Fruit of the Doom" is another brilliant, boundary-pushing collaboration from the Kamptal dream-team of Matthias Warnung and Lorenz & Magdalena Haas-Allram (Weingut Allram).

While Dolce und die Japaner plays in the bright, skin-contact white category, Fruit of the Doom is a deeper, more experimental take. It is typically a Rosé or light-bodied red (Rotwein) depending on the specific multi-vintage or multi-varietal blend, crafted with zero compromises. The tongue-in-cheek name is a playful nod to the famous clothing brand Fruit of the Loom, but the juice inside is pure, untamed, low-intervention energy.

📋 Technical Snapshot & Vinification

This wine is designed to challenge the traditional boundaries of what Kamptal varieties can do when pushed into the natural spectrum.

  • Grapes: Usually a field blend or master mix featuring Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and occasionally a splash of white grapes (like Granny Smith-esque Grüner Veltliner or Müller-Thurgau) co-fermented to lift the aromatics and boost the crunch factor.

  • Method: Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. The wine undergoes varying degrees of whole-cluster maceration to keep the tannins soft and the fruit primary. It is bottled completely unfined and unfiltered with zero or micro-amounts of sulfur added at bottling.

  • Style: Cloudy, raw, and vibrant. It sits comfortably in the Glou-Glou (highly drinkable) category, emphasizing energy over heavy oak or high alcohol.

🍷 Tasting Notes

Because it is unfiltered, the wine pours with a charming, rustic haze and a deep ruby/cerise color.

  • The Nose: A Red Fruit Explosion. It blasts out of the glass with crunchy sour cherries, wild cranberries, and raspberries. Because of the natural vinification, there is a lovely, rustic complexity underneath—think damp earth, white pepper, and a subtle kombucha-like funk that clears up beautifully with a little air.

  • The Palate: Juicy and Sappy. The entry is pure energy. The acidity is high and sähköinen (electric), driving the tart red berry flavors straight across the palate. The tannins are incredibly low and soft, giving it a smooth, slippery, and incredibly refreshing mouthfeel.

  • The Finish: Crisp, tart, and mouth-watering, leaving a clean taste of pomegranate seeds and a touch of stony minerality.

🍽️ Food Pairings

This light, high-acid profile makes it an incredibly versatile pairing tool, particularly for dishes that struggle with heavier, high-tannin reds.

  • The Charcuterie Match: An absolute killer alongside pâtés, rillettes, and air-dried ham. The bright acidity slices through the rich fats like a razor.

  • The Bistro Classic: Perfect with Steak Tartare or a classic Duck Confit.

  • Finnish Twist: Try this chilled down next to Crispy Fried Baltic Herrings (Paistetut silakat) or Smoked Salmon with a dill-sour cream sauce. While it's a red-ish wine, its tart berry fruit and lack of heavy tannins act exactly like a squeeze of lemon or lingonberry, cutting through the oiliness of the fish beautifully.

Pro Tip

This wine is alive and thrives on being served chilled. Put it in the fridge and pull it out about 15 minutes before serving so it sits around 10°C–12°C. Give the bottle a gentle, slow tilt upside down before opening just to redistribute the fine lees uniformly if you want that full, creamy texture.
