The "Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove" – A Masterclass in Chenin Tension

In May 2026, the Arnaud Lambert "Coulée de Saint-Cyr" remains one of the most intellectually satisfying whites in the Loire Valley. While Arnaud is famous for his work on the hill of Brézé, this cuvée comes from Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, specifically from a south-east facing parcel of vines planted in 1948.

The 2023 and 2024 releases are currently the focus of collectors. Following Arnaud’s decision to drop the "Clos" designation in 2022 to focus on the terroir names themselves, this wine continues to prove why it’s often compared to the legendary Guiberteau "Clos de Carmes."

🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)

The recent vintages have benefited from Arnaud’s move toward "contained electricity"—maintaining the staggering acidity of Saumur limestone but wrapping it in more generous fruit.

  • The Nose: Striking and Pure. It opens with a classic "Chenin pop" of Granny Smith apples, lemon zest, and white flowers. As it breathes, it reveals the Saint-Cyr signature: gunflint minerality, beeswax, and a faint hint of fresh almonds from the time spent in older French oak.

  • The Palate: Dense and Electric. The entry is "crystalline and vertical." You’ll find a concentrated core of quince and stone fruit, supported by a chalky, saline texture. Thanks to the low pH (around 3.05–3.10), the wine feels incredibly precise, like a laser across the tongue.

  • The Finish: Long and Saline. It concludes with a mouth-watering "sea spray" finish and a lingering note of pastry and lime.

Pro Tip

Arnaud’s philosophy is to avoid sulfur during the aging process until bottling. This allows the wine to "sort itself out" and prevents the acidity from feeling "square" or aggressive.

The Serving Tip: Serve at 10°C–12°C. Do not over-chill this wine. It has the weight and complexity of a Grand Cru Burgundy; if served too cold, the beautiful wax and honey notes will remain hidden behind the acidity.

The Pairing:

  • The "Classic" Match: Exceptional with Roasted Chicken with tarragon or a Goat's Cheese Crottin.

  • The "Luxe" Match: Its power and salinity make it a brilliant partner for Grilled Scallops or Turbot in a lemon-butter sauce.

  • Finnish Twist: A world-class match for Fried Whitefish (Siika) served with spring vegetables. The wine’s chalky texture mirrors the delicate skin of the fish, while the acidity cuts through the butter.
