Jewel of Bussia – Silky Florals, Sandstone-Driven Elegance, and Monumental Structure
The pride of the iconic Poderi Aldo Conterno estate, the single-vineyard cult Barolo Colonello, hails from one of the most esteemed subsections of the Bussia MGA in Monforte d'Alba. The Colonello vineyard stands apart from the rest of Bussia due to its soil composition, which features a remarkably high proportion of marine sand and sandstone combined with potassium-rich calcareous clay. This distinctive terroir imparts the wine’s trademark heady floral aromatics, fine-grained silky mouthfeel, and immense aging potential.
The 2022 vintage yields a deeply concentrated, highly focused expression marked by stellar energy and aromatic purity. The advanced age of the vines (roughly 40–45 years) coupled with traditional long aging in large Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi) achieves a striking balance between formidable structure and near-silky floral grace.
🍷 Tasting Profile (2026 Perspective)
-
The Nose: Intoxicating, Floral, and Multi-Layered. Opens with Colonello's classic aromatic signature: dried rose petals, violet, and blood orange, underpinned by ripe red cherry, licorice, earthy truffle, organic tobacco leaf, and savory graphite.
-
The Palate: Elegant, Highly Concentrated, and Fine-Grained. Exceptionally silky and aromatic for Bussia standards. The tannins are ultra-dense yet seamlessly integrated, propelled by a vibrant, mineral-driven acidity that carries the wine with remarkable length.
-
The Finish: Extremely Long, Aristocratic, and Spicy. Concludes with a lingering tapestry of red fruit, crushed rose petals, chalky minerality, and fine leather notes.
