Agrapart Avize Amphora Champagne Brut Nature 1er cru 750ml 2021

The Terroir Messenger – Ancient Vessel, Modern Precision
In May 2026, the Agrapart Avize "Amphora" has emerged as one of the most intellectually curious wines in Fabrice Agrapart’s new solo range. While the estate is based in Avize, this particular cuvée is a dedicated study of Grand Cru Oger fruit.
Unlike the family’s historical reliance on oak (demi-muids) or stainless steel, Fabrice has chosen Georgian-style terracotta amphorae for this bottling. This choice is not about adding flavor (like oak), but about using the natural micro-oxygenation of the clay to provide a "pure, unmasked" channel for the Oger terroir to express itself.
🍷 Tasting Notes (2026 Perspective)
Critics are describing this as a "primal and vibrating" expression of Chardonnay. Because it is vinified without oak influence, the fruit feels more crystalline and "naked."
-
The Nose: Earthy and Stone-Driven. It leads with a distinct "clay-like" minerality, followed by dried herbs (thyme and sage) and lemon peel. There is a sophisticated stone fruit core—think yellow plum and white peach—that feels solar and ripe.
-
The Palate: Precise and Phenolic. The entry is bone-dry (Brut Nature). The amphora aging gives it a unique "vertical" texture; it’s not creamy like the wood-aged cuvées, but has a subtle, skin-contact-like grip and a "stony" weight. You’ll find layers of preserved citrus and wet flint.
-
The Finish: Long and Taut. It concludes with a high-tension finish and a mouth-watering saline snap that is characteristic of Oger's chalky subsoils.

Pro Tip
This wine is part of Fabrice's "Atomic" philosophy—breaking down the elements of winemaking to their simplest forms. By removing oak, he removes the "vanilla and spice" mask, leaving only the fruit and the clay.
The Serving Tip: Serve at 11°C–12°C. Do not over-chill, as the phenolic "grip" from the amphora can turn bitter if the wine is too cold. A wider white wine glass is preferred over a flute to let the earthy, herbal aromatics breathe.
The Pairing:
-
The "Terroir" Match: Perfect with Grilled Langoustines or Raw Oysters. The saline, flinty nature of the wine mirrors the sea perfectly.
-
The Savory Match: Its earthy undertones make it a great partner for Salt-Baked Sea Bass or Poultry with lemon and thyme.
-
Finnish Twist: An exceptional match for Pan-fried Perch (Ahven) seasoned only with sea salt and a touch of lemon. The wine's mineral tension and citrus peel notes highlight the sweetness of the fresh fish without overwhelming it.
